Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 pounds ground beef, 80 percent lean
  • 4 black charcoal burger buns
  • 4 slices cheddar cheese
  • 4 large lettuce leaves
  • 1 large tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 medium red onion, sliced into rings
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat a grill or skillet over medium high heat and lightly brush with olive oil.
  2. In a mixing bowl, gently combine ground beef with salt and black pepper until just mixed.
  3. Form the beef mixture into 4 equal patties, pressing a slight indent in the center of each.
  4. Place the patties on the hot grill or skillet and cook for 4 to 5 minutes per side for medium doneness.
  5. During the last minute of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and allow it to melt.
  6. Lightly toast the charcoal buns on the grill for about 30 seconds.
  7. Spread mayonnaise on the bottom bun, layer with lettuce, tomato, the cheesy patty, red onion, and top bun.
  8. Serve immediately while warm and juicy.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the ground beef to keep the patties tender.
  • Press a small indent in the center of each patty to prevent puffing.
  • Let the patties rest for a few minutes after cooking to retain juices.
  • Toast the buns lightly for better texture and structure.
