Soft, fluffy, golden sesame rolls with a slightly crisp crust and a tender interior, perfect as a side dish or for making mini sandwiches.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/4 cups warm milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 tablespoons sesame seeds
  • 1 egg yolk + 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.
  3. Add the egg, butter, salt, and flour. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough until smooth, then cover and let rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Divide dough into 12 equal pieces, roll into balls, and place on a greased or parchment-lined baking tray.
  6. Use scissors to make five cuts around each ball to form petals, then lightly press the center.
  7. Brush each roll with egg wash and sprinkle with sesame seeds.
  8. Bake for 18–20 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving. Optionally brush with melted butter for extra softness.

Notes

  • Cover baked rolls with a towel to retain moisture and keep them soft.
  • You can refrigerate shaped rolls overnight before baking.
  • Use oil instead of butter for a dairy-free version.
  • Try different seeds like poppy or flax for topping variety.
