-
- Yellow cake mix (or homemade yellow cake batter)
- Orange gelatin (Jell-O) mix
- Boiling water
- Cold water
- Cream cheese, softened
- Unsalted butter, softened
- Powdered sugar
- Vanilla extract
- Orange zest (optional)
- Fresh orange slices or candied orange peel for garnish
-
- Prepare and bake the cake — Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9×13-inch baking pan by greasing and flouring it. Prepare the yellow cake batter according to the package or recipe instructions. Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
- Poke the cake — Allow the cake to cool for 10 minutes. Using the handle of a wooden spoon or a large skewer, poke holes all over the cake about 1 inch apart, making sure you don’t go all the way through the bottom.
- Prepare the gelatin mixture — In a medium bowl, dissolve the orange gelatin mix in 1 cup of boiling water. Stir until completely dissolved. Add 1 cup of cold water and mix well.
- Pour gelatin over cake — Slowly pour the orange gelatin mixture over the cake, letting it soak into the holes you poked. Refrigerate the cake for at least 3 hours or until the gelatin sets.
- Make the cream cheese frosting — In a large bowl, beat softened cream cheese and butter together until smooth. Gradually add powdered sugar and vanilla extract, beating until fluffy and creamy. Add orange zest if using for extra citrus flavor.
- Frost the cake — Once the gelatin is set, spread the cream cheese frosting evenly over the top of the cake.
- Garnish and serve — Decorate with fresh orange slices or candied orange peel for a beautiful finish. Slice and serve chilled.
Notes
- Use fresh orange juice for best flavor.
- For a dairy-free version, substitute pudding and whipped topping with suitable alternatives.
