Soft, hearty oat sandwich bread with a golden crust and a tender crumb. Perfect for sandwiches, toast, or simply warm with butter.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and honey. Let sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy.
  2. Stir in oats, milk, melted butter, and salt. Gradually add flour until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. Punch down the dough, shape into a loaf, and place into a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  5. Let rise again for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, preheat oven to 375°F.
  6. Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden and sounds hollow when tapped.
  7. Brush top with melted butter and let cool completely before slicing.

Notes

  • Use warm, not hot water to activate the yeast properly.
  • Let the oats soak briefly for a softer texture.
  • For extra flavor, sprinkle oats on top before baking.
  • Cool fully before slicing to prevent a gummy crumb.
