These Homemade Soft Pretzels are golden, chewy, and buttery, with a classic salty crust and soft, pillowy inside. Perfect for snacking, game day, or serving with your favorite dips.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F)
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons instant yeast
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup baking soda (for boiling)
  • 8 cups water (for boiling)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
  • Coarse salt, for topping

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 450°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and brown sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  3. Stir in salt and flour until a dough forms. Knead for 5–7 minutes until smooth.
  4. Cover and let the dough rest for 30 minutes.
  5. Divide dough into 8 pieces. Roll each into a rope and shape into pretzels.
  6. Bring 8 cups water and baking soda to a boil. Drop each pretzel into the bath for 30 seconds. Remove and place on baking sheet.
  7. Sprinkle with coarse salt and bake for 12–14 minutes or until golden brown.
  8. Brush with melted butter and serve warm.

Notes

  • Don’t skip the baking soda bath — it’s essential for texture and color.
  • Shape doesn’t have to be perfect — rustic twists still taste amazing.
  • Add toppings like sesame seeds, cinnamon sugar, or cheese for variety.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container or freeze and reheat as needed.
