Tender pearl onions gently simmered and coated in a rich, glossy butter glaze with a touch of sweetness. This classic side dish is simple, elegant, and perfect for holiday dinners or cozy family meals.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound pearl onions, peeled
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Place the pearl onions, water, butter, granulated sugar, salt, and black pepper into a medium saucepan.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer over medium heat.
  3. Cover and cook for about 15 minutes, or until the onions are fork tender.
  4. Remove the lid and continue cooking uncovered for about 10 minutes, stirring gently, until the liquid reduces and forms a glossy glaze that coats the onions.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
  6. Transfer to a serving bowl and serve warm.

Notes

  • Blanch fresh pearl onions briefly to make peeling easier.
  • Stir gently while cooking to keep the onions intact.
  • Allow enough time for the glaze to reduce properly for best texture.
  • A splash of balsamic vinegar or fresh thyme can be added at the end for extra depth.
